This exceptional single cask cognac from the mid 1970s is a grande champagne of the highest possible quality. Handmade on a wood fired small alambic charentaise and then kept with great care until the bottling date 30/06/2022. Indeed. This cognac is a sister cask of our successful release #16 (joint with The Whisky Jury). In consultation with Olivier and Léa van Laurichesse, we came to an agreement in May 2022 to bottle not 1 but 2 casks and release both of them in 2022, both bottled on 30/06/2022. An opportunity that you should not miss, we speak here of exceptional grande champagne cognac.

You can again expect an explosion of fruit that is so beautifully balanced. Ripe apricots and mango lead the way. In combination with the ripe notes of pineapple, we also get influences from red fruits such as cherries and berries. The balance of acidity, sweetness and spiciness is so beautifully integrated. This cognac is wonderfully aged in layers and has a majestic aftertaste. Another gem of a cognac that we are proud to be able to share!

about the producer:
Olivier Laurichesse and Léa are both from Segonzac, this is where their roots lie. Olivier comes from a family with a long history in viticulture and cognac distillation. Olivier continued his studies in wine and oenology and gained his first work experience in Alsace and Médoc and returned to his "own terroir" in 2003. In 2015, Olivier started independently with 40 ha of vineyards located in Verrières and Angeac-Champagne located in the grande champagne, the first cru of the cognac region. Léa obtained a bachelor's degree in wine and spirit trading in 2008 and then went on to do a 3-month internship in New York America for an importer-distributor of spirits. She then resumed her studies at university and in 2010 she met Olivier.

In 2018, a marriage and 3 children later, they launched "laurichesse cognac" together to promote the barrels of cognac that Olivier's father, Guy Laurichesse, distilled in the 1970s (on a small 12 hl alambic). They also now distil cognac themselves from their own vineyards. Guy had handed over the keys to his chai, a hidden cellar at the back of the garden of his residence in Segonzac, to his son in 2018. What makes this cognac unique is that it is a single cask and has not been blended over the years. Very unique spirits that were never commercialized and that only waited for the next generation to convince the enthusiasts of its great qualities and aromas. Grande champagne cognac at its peak!

In the late summer of 2021, during a cognac trip, we went to pick up our daily fresh bread at the bakery on the square in Segonzac. This beautiful municipality is our regular base when we are in France. Here we were pointed out that the neighbor across the street also had a cognac house. For real? Many times we passed this little square without realizing that behind that brown gate a treasure of sublime cognac was hidden. We got in touch and a first visit followed in December 2021. The sweet and down-to-earth owners Olivier and Léa introduced us to their family business. We are very grateful and proud to have this exclusif collaboration!

Serge Valentin, whiskyfun.com, 09/04/2023:
We're back in Segonzac! Chef de Meute would mean Leader of the Pack, so I suppose this one was deemed the best cask at some point. Colour: amber. Nose: this one too is a tad fragile here and there, but as soon as I'm finding quince jelly, I just bow and keep quiet. So, quince jelly (and paste). With water: oh, furniture polish, citron liqueur, old pack of Camels, ointments, lady's hand cream, putty, lemon cordial… Incredible what water does to this one. Mouth (neat): and once again, there is more action on the palate. In truth this is magnificent, with sublime quinces, apricots, peaches and papayas. Flabbergasting. With just a drop of water: towards old malt whisky, early 1970s Clynelish, Balblair, Lochside, Benriach… Beeswax, apricots, mirabelles, acacia… Finish: not the longest but the same flavours are in majesty. Awesome honeyed aftertaste, with high-end Pinot Gris from Zind Humbrecht's. Only the aftertaste got a tad green and drying, which is totally normal. Comments: there isn't much you could do, especially if you're a whisky enthusiast. The Belgians!

Nose: the beginning is definitely citrus - in the first reflex it feels lemon, but after a longer focus pomelo (do you know this fruit?) is noticeable. In the reviews I read tangerines are present as well. I don't smell them unfortunately. Pine needles and mint harmonize with citrus here. Later on, the scent evolves into floor polish and an old worn leather wallet or maybe leather belt which your grandfather tossed to a closet 30 years ago.
Taste: very oily cognac, creamy, fantastically fills your mouth. You can feel a peppery hit at first, but it quickly mellows out. The taste is a continuation of the smell - lemons, forest moisture, moss, leaf litter, but also tropical fruits - pineapple the most. There is no sweetness here, it is very dry and elegant. Not a woody thing.
Finish: long, pleasant, herbal. Mint, which was clear on the nose disappears, thyme appeared instead. Finally, something surprising for me. After tasting some edition of Tobermory single malt whisky, the aroma of a damp cellar and wet mushrooms stayed in my head. I felt it at the end too.
We have a multi-dimensional cognac here, fantastically balanced. I think that many people, including me, in a blind tasting would not guess what kind of spirit it is.

Ruben Luyten, www.whiskynotes.be, 11/11/2022:
Nose: this also has that heady side of wood polish (or rather silver polish), followed by some leathery notes. Behind it there are tangerines and candied orange peels. Dried herbs and hints of cinnamon. Also juicy apricots and a very light whiff of potpourri. Really good.
Mouth: again a nice citrusy acidity (tangerines, oranges and pink grapefruits) quickly followed by cinnamon and black peppercorns. Moving towards liquorice and leather, with some (almost rummy) overripe pineapple in the background. Some red berries in the distance.
Finish: long, minty, with a subtle drying note of clove and herbal tea.
Another excellent haul from the young house of Laurichesse. Such a nice, acidic fruitiness combined with power. In this line-up the Voyer has a slight edge (until you take the price into account).
Score: 91/100
