We’re back in Petite Champagne, this time in Brissons de Laage estate. A 50yo+ cognac bottled at 54,8%! There’s already an OB 60yo P.C from Bertrand (a nice one by the way, very refined) bottled at 49,2%, so quite high for the cognac world. But 54,8%. That’s another level. So let’s see if it’s well-integrated in this venerable P.C. Here is the Malternative Belgium Les Patissiers!
Colour: Amber, gold lights. Very heavy regular tears.
Nose: Impressive exotic notes of kiwi to begin with this Les Patissiers! A great mix of exotic fruits (kiwi, banana, young pineapple) and some French Indies rum earthy notes. Dry rancioted notes too. Very tobacco-y in fact. Hints of plums liquor and raisins with more air. It feels old for sure. A tad of umami notes on white mushrooms and strong tea scents. A definitive dryness on tobacco and dry cellars smells.
Palate: Acidulous texture with a bit of acidity at the very end of your tongue. Dried fruits melted to buttery tones. Opulent acidity on young quinces. Heavy licorice aromas stuck to the palate. Young melon shades in the aftertaste. Very dry and spicy. Fresh menthol notes in the background.
Last Notes: Obvious cedarwood and tobacco notes. Great quinces and acacia honey shades too. A tad of freshness on sandalwood and cardamom. Nice chocolate/moka notes too. Delicious toffee aromas back on the palate. The dryness previously perceived seems a bit smoother now but there’s still a strong spiciness on nutmeg and black pepper. Full of cocoa powder notes with its typical bitterness. Roasted hazelnut and mint chocolate in the aftertaste.
Another style of P.C, far from Jurignac’s outstanding fruity bombs for example. This Malternative Belgium Les Patissiers from Réaux-Sur-Trègfle is darker, with a distinct dryness on tobacco. The ABV could be a bit lower in my humble opinion, but that’s the only shortcoming I see in this great P.C.

Mind you, MA50 doesn't mean 'where's my Malaguti?' (oh forget about that, that's very personal), it rather means 'Minimum Age 50 years'. So, probably circa The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Colour: deep amber. Nose: cognacs, unless one of the 'bois', is a little lighter and more aromatic indeed, this is just another example. I find it a little more oriental than others by the way, with more figs, more orange blossom water, even a little more rosewater. Wonderful notes of dates filled with marzipan, which is a killer desert by the way, even if a little out of fashion, sadly. Hay. With water: wonderful piney oils, ointments… The old oak speaking out. Mouth (neat): knack and punch this time, with several kinds of eaux-de-vie, not only fine. Mirabelle and damson seem to be obvious, also some earthier prunes. Crikey, I would have said armagnac this time; some progress still to be made at Château WF, it seems… With water: absolutely lovely, swims well, drinks well, what does the people want? Finish: medium, rather more on assorted dried fruits and high-protein energy bars. You know, peanuts, almonds and stuff. Comments: same ballpark once again, some brilliant cognac with some easiness and no flaws whatsoever, very close to that 'wow factor' we need to get to 90+. Yeah I know, as we used to say in the 1970s, the system is the problem.

Al sinds 1731 is de familie Bertrand actief in de Petite Champagne. De windmolen van Bel’Air, prominent aanwezig in het logo van deze cognac, is de laatste van de stad Reaux en wordt omgeven door de wijngaarden van het huis. Pieter Knapen, de sterke man achter Malternative Belgium, selecteerde een vat dat al in de 1960s aan de kant werd gelegd en normaal gezien gebruikt wordt voor de assemblage van Bertrand’s Héritage bottelingen. We kunnen er maar om juichen, zou ik zeggen. Een cognac van minstens 50 jaar oud, dat proef je niet alle dagen, toch?
Boem! Pats! Paukenslag! Ik steek mijn neus nog maar in het glas en ik ben al door de knieën gegaan. Geweldig complexe en waxy neus op gestoofde abrikozen en Tunesische pruimenconfituur, appelcake met chocoladeschaafsel en pruimtabak. Rancio zoals het hoort. Je ruikt het vat! Maar wie denk dat dit betekent dat hij droog is, komt bedrogen uit. Lekker zoet, stoffig en old school. Zalig.
Hij streelt de tong met een verrassend frisse toets van munt alvorens het fruit explodeert. Denk appelsien, abrikozen, Reine Claude, pompelmoes en een karrenvracht aan rode bessen. De pruimtabak keert weer, ondersteund door een handjevol kruiden met wat peper op kop. De sterkte is nagenoeg perfect.
De afdronk is hemels. Lang, warm, kruidig en zoet, maar met een complexiteit waar je stil van wordt. Dit is Genieten met hoofdletter.
Amai, mijn klak, wat een klasbak van een cognac (ik begin er van te rijmen)! Een flesje van deze 50-jarige cognac kan de jouwe zijn voor 235 EUR. Heb je nog plek onder je kerstboom? Vul maar op!

Nose: great rancio style, with stewed fruits (apricots, ripe damsons) as well as pipe tobacco, honey and a bit of polished oak. Lovely waxy notes with some pastry sweetness. It’s a rather complex profile, later there’s also sweet Earl Grey tea, pink grapefruit peels and dried wildflowers, with a whiff of natural caramel.
Mouth: minty and spicy at first, still with this dark toffee note and a milk chocolate note before it bursts open and shows its fruity core. Oranges, apricots, yellow plums and sweet berries, in quite a jammy way. Some peppered raisins, cedar wood and herbal honey. Hints of sweet tobacco leaves. It also shows a grassy side before it starts to fade.
Finish: long, still fruity, now with grassy notes, caramelized nuts and menthol.
This one shows a great interaction of bright rancio fruits and darker, more robust spicy notes (because of the higher ABV perhaps). In general I’m not a fan of caramelized flavours but here it’s a real asset.
